Visit with Cynthia Leitich Smith

www.cynthialeitichsmith.com

Today we're visiting with Cynthia Leitich Smith, author of several titles for kids and young adults. Her newest release, ETERNAL, was published by Candlewick on 2/10/09!

With diabolical wit, the author of TANTALIZE revisits a deliciously dark world where vampires vie with angels — and girls just want to have fangs.

At last, Miranda is the life of the party: all she had to do was die. Elevated and adopted by none other than the reigning King of the Mantle of Dracul, Miranda goes from high-school theater wannabe to glamorous royal fiend overnight. Meanwhile, her reckless and adoring guardian angel, Zachary, demoted to human guise as the princess’s personal assistant, has his work cut out for him trying to save his girl’s soul and plan the Master’s fast-approaching Death Day gala. In alternating points of view, Miranda and Zachary navigate a cut-throat eternal aristocracy as they play out a dangerous and darkly hilarious love story for the ages.

OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS | MySpace Video

I had the chance to ask Cynthia some questions about her life and writing, which she graciously answered to share with all of you!

1) If you could bring any character from one of your books to life, who would it be and why?

Joshua, the guardian angel liaison, who periodically checks in with his GA buddy Zachary in ETERNAL (Candlewick, 2009, 2010). Joshua is high-spirited and a total charmer, but also loyal to his best bud.

2) Twitter your newest or upcoming release in 140 characters or less.

Guardian angel fails girl he loves and loses wings but gets second chance to redeem them both after she becomes vampire princess.

3) You have the chance to spend the day with any character from one of your favorite books. Who would you choose and why?

Kit Tyler from THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND by Elizabeth George Speare (1950) so I could thank her for making me feel like someone understood what it was to be me.

4) When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Up until I was about 22, I wanted to be a reporter. I was editor of my high school newspaper, wrote for my college newspaper, and worked as a reporting intern during college and law school for several small town newspapers as well as The Detroit Legal News and The Dallas Morning News.

5) Your favorite subject in high school – and your least favorite.

My favorite subject in high school was AP European History and my least favorite was Algebra.

6) The one book everyone in the world should read.

MARLEY'S GHOST by David Levithan (Dial, 2005). It’s a terrific tribute to Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL and a tremendous celebration of love.

7) The book you wish you had written.

BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE by Annette Curtis Klause (Delacorte, 1999), though I could never part Annette’s byline from it. This is the novel that got me writing YA.

8) Your five favorite reads from 2009 (books you read during the year; they do not have to have been published during 2009).

THE CHOSEN ONE by Carol Lynch Williams (St. Martins, 2009).
GEEKTASTIC: STORIES FROM THE NERD HERD, edited by Holly Black and Cecil Castellucci (Little, Brown, 2009), which does include my short story, “The Wrath of Dawn,” co-authored by Greg Leitich Smith.
GOING BOVINE by Libba Bray (Delacorte, 2009).
JUMPED by Rita Williams-Garcia (HarperCollins, 2009).
WATERSMEET by Ellen Jensen Abbott (Marshall Cavendish, 2009).

9) The 2010 release you’re most looking forward to reading.

THE LESS-DEAD by April Lurie (Delacorte, 2010), a serial-killer story set in my hometown of Austin, Texas.

10) What is your astrological sign? How closely does it match your personality?

I’m a Capricorn of the mountain-goat variety, always try to push myself to greater heights and having to make a special effort to play once in a while.

11) You’re going off your diet for one day and only eating food from restaurants. What do you eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? (Include the restaurant each meal comes from.)

Sausage Migas Con Queso from Maudie’s Tex-Mex.
“Two eggs scrambled Mexican style with sausage or chorizo, tomatoes, onions, serranos and corn tortilla chips. Finished with queso amarillo and served with refried beans.”

Trio at The Four Seasons Austin
“Turkey Wrap – Whole Wheat Tortilla, Chipotle Mayonnaise, Avocado, Farmer's Greens, Melon Trio”

Musashino Sushi
Avocado Kama, edamame, miso soup, Alaskan roll, and spicy salmon roll.

12) What is your ultimate vacation destination?

The Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.

13) If you weren’t an author, what job would you be doing?

Librarian by day, Batgirl by night.

14) Your publisher has instructed you to write a new series based on an endangered species. What animal do you choose?

Indian Python.

15) The paranormal genre is big in teen/YA literature right now. Most bestsellers feature vampires, werewolves, faeries, angels, or the like as a main character. In your opinion, why are teens currently fascinated with all things paranormal?

Teens have always been fascinated with all things paranormal. What we’re seeing is a correction in publishing. For many years, editors were telling writers that they weren’t interested in seeing fantasy stories—“kids don’t read fantasy anymore.” Thank you, Mr. Potter.

16) You’re writing a book where you can change one major historical event. Which event do you change? (For example, Abraham Lincoln wasn’t assassinated, or Japan never bombed Pearl Harbor.)

Oh, no. I’m well versed in the ripple effect.

17) A group of teens ask you the best way to become a published writer. How do you answer the question?

Don’t focus on the “published” part. Focus on the “writer” part. The rest will come.

Hey Cynthia! Your tweet brought me here. Your book sounds really great. I'm curious what you do for promotion...how do you reach your YA audience?

I do a lot, particularly with web sites and web presence, but it's still difficult to reach your intended audience, I think.

Howdy Misa, I do hear from a lot of teens through LJ, MySpace, facebook, and Twitter, and I also speak at a number of conferences, festivals, schools and libraries. I do outreach to YAs and to the champions (booksellers, teachers, and librarians) who connect books to them. It's sort of a mixed approach. I make a special effort to make noise whenever I have a new release, but I also strive to be consistent and, every week, try to do one small thing in support of my books.

Coll, that's terrific! I hope you enjoy the books!

I'm excited about reading this book -- and reading those books on your list. I'm adding this to my summer need to do list! What amazes me the most is just how much you do! Your writing, your websites, promoting books, your conferences, your teaching. How do you manage such a schedule? What is your typical day like?

Hello, Hello, Hello!

Speaking of high school... Have you ever read books by foreign authors (maybe German?) in your high school time? In my school days we only read books by German authors.

Now I'm off to check Marly's Ghost. :D

Thanks for the heads up on Facebook about your interview here. Great job. This coming from your almost driver in Chicago. lol

My son lives in Austin so next time I'm out there I'll have to try some of your eatery recommendations. That's two heads up in one day. You're good.

Thanks,

Hi Cynthia,
I'm so excited to see you here.
How do you begin your writing process? Do you outline? Do you trudge straight through and write the proverbial "crappy" first draft before going back to edit? Or, do you edit as you write? Whatever your process, the perfect words seem to spill onto the page.

Hugs,

Great interview! I especially love your answer to the question about getting published. Great advice! Thanks Cyn, for all you do!

Eternal sounds like a fascinating read! Algebra is my least favorite subject thus far in my high school journey.

Hello Cynthia. I agree with your advice to young writers: Don't focus on the "publish" aspect, but focus on the "writing" part of the equation. As a former high school and college writing instructor, I saw too many students who wrote with the hopes of getting published but never wanted to focus on the craft. It takes practice!!

I'm adding your book to my to-read list, and I'm telling my 21-y-o, who can't get enough paranormal literature, to head to the bookstore on her way home to purchase it.

Thanks for your insight.

Hey Cyn

A couple of questions:
Did you write Eternal from two POV's (Zachary and Miranda) right from the start?
Also, are the characters from Tantalize showing up again in the next book in the series? Can you give a wee glimpse into the future, characterwise?

Lindsey

jpetroroy, isn't it an amazing hotel? Imagine Marilyn Monroe sunning herself poolside. So much history, and I love the arts-and-craft architectural tradition. I'm originally from the plains states, and I adore those clean, soothing lines.

Kelly, Blood and Chocolate was a revelation to me. I loved Vivian's strength and how unselfish she was in her love for and loyalty to her pack. I loved that she was a true wolf girl, with all the primal hungers that went with it. Which of course brings me to...well, I won't spoil it. But let's just say that the true male lead is perhaps one of the most dynamic, intelligent, and yowza in all of YA lit. Plus, I love that his love for her is so rooted in respect.

A typical day, Bobbi? I guess that's one where I'm not speaking or teaching at Vermont College of Fine Arts' MFA program in Writing for Children and YAs. Though I do a fair amount of both.

I'm typically at the computer before 8 a.m., posting my blog, touching base with my networks and corresponding with readers, writers, students, gatekeepers, and publishing pros.

The afternoon is my first window of writing time, say, from one to five.

Then it's dinner, and afterward, Greg (my very cute husband and sometimes co-author) and I put in another couple of three hours.

From there, we usually unwind by watching a TV show or two on DVD, during which I'm back online.

I know it sounds busy, and it is. But this is my dream. I'm the first person in my family (that I know of) who worked for reasons other than to mark time and make money. I'm honored by this life, being part of the magic community of storytellers.

Cynthia Leitich Smith said...

Letter Garden, when I was in high school we read Shakespeare, Dickens, Hawthorne, etc. (not so much with the Germans) and I never would've believed that they had such an influence on me.

But when it came time for me to write for YAs, I found myself nodding to those old-school masters.

One of the primary mentor characters in the Gothic fantasy series, Mrs. Levy, is an English teacher, and it's been fun to weave references to classics into my own work, hopefully creating a bridge to the past.

Margay, thanks! Blessed crosses over the casts of Tantalize and Eternal and is arguably a sequel to both, though it's a more direct sequel to Tantalize. The prose novel to follow Blessed will be more of a direct sequel to Eternal.

Thanks for stopping by, Nina! And yes, Austin is a first-rate town for foodies.

Cynthia Leitich Smith said...

Donna, you're a gem! I typically write a throwaway draft--the whole story from start to finish. Then I print it, read it, delete it, toss it, and start over with a sort of conversational outline. It invites me to experiment while ensuring that I'm eventually building on a strong foundation.

Thanks for surfing by, Jo!

Melanie, I wasn't much of a math student myself. I probably shouldn't say this, but the key for me was simply doing well enough to fulfill the requirement in college.

LuAnn, thanks for cheering my pro-process approach. It's all about the art, the work, and the fun of it, you know? Thanks for telling your 21-y-o to pick up the novel! I hope you both enjoy it!

Hi, Lindsey! I always knew Eternal would be told in alternating POVs (I wanted to explore an extreme contrast), but originally the guardian angel character Zachary was an elf named Topher. (I know!). And as for Tantalize characters, that's a BIG YES! You will be seeing some folks from that novel again in Blessed.

Great interview!

This is an odd question that popped in my mind when I read that Joshua was your favorite character. I loved him too, and I got this sense that he might be gay. But then again, it could just be wishful thinking since I quite enjoyed his character. So my question is if Joshua is gay, or if that was even something that crossed your mind while writing him.

BookChic, that question has occurred to me about Joshua, too! I'm still getting to know him, but I wouldn't be at all surprised. And there are other gay characters in the series, both minor and major, some of whom will have bigger roles as we move forward.

Kanishk, glad to hear it! Keep up the good work!

Brittany, thanks for your interest! I often post giveaway announcements at my blog--featuring my books and those by other authors--so keep an eye out. And don't forget your local public library! If the books aren't on the shelves, talk to the librarian about getting them in on loan.

Angel, are you sure you're not a character in Eternal?

God's Gal, it's a thrill to hear from a Joshua fan. And the key to novel writing is to tell yourself that you're not writing a novel. You're writing a chapter, no, a scene, wait, a paragraph, a sentence. Take it word by word. You'll get there. Have faith.
